He did it while walking and strolling. As a wandering poet, he cherished solitude, though shared from a strange sensibility: that of the lonely one who contemplated his own town as a way of finding peace, the calm that life sometimes denied him.<\/p>\n<p>In his walks, he also prompted the encounter with his townsfolk and his town. The latter, as he used to say, welcomes and accuses us.<\/p>\n<div class=\"times\">\u201cWhen all has gone, when I have gone, \/ This gaze will remain, \/ The one that asked and gave, without time\u201d<\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-left: 10%;\">, he says in <em>The Flight of Celebration<\/em>.<sup>1<\/sup><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Claudio Rodr\u00edguez Permanent Seminar aims to relate that timeless gaze to the literary route through the places that Claudio inhabited. Such places are either reflected or have left a deep mark on his life and oeuvre.<\/p>\n<p><sup>1<\/sup> <span style=\"font-size: 85%;\">Rodr\u00edguez, C. (2008). <em>Collected Poems<\/em>. Shearmans Books.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>CLAUDIO RODR\u00cdGUEZ (1934-1999) &#8211; BIOGRAPHY<\/strong><\/h2>\n<hr \/>\n<div class=\"blue\">1934<\/div>\n<p>He was born in Zamora on January 30th. He was named Claudio Valent\u00edn Francisco.\u00a0 His family and friends called him \u201cCay\u00edn\u201d. He used to stay at his paternal grandmother\u2019s property, very close to the town, in contact with nature and farm work.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1944<\/div>\n<p>He attends the Claudio Moyano High School. The influences of Mr. Ram\u00f3n Luelmo, who teaches Literature, and Mr. Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda L\u00f3pez, who teaches Philosophy, are decisive. At home, he receives the first literary stimuli. His father is a great reader of poetry.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1947<\/div>\n<p>On March 23, his father dies suddenly.<\/p>\n<div class=\"times\">\u201cI\u2019ve never had a family life. My father\u2019s death, a difficult relationship with my mother, who was very young\u2026 nor could I have a very close relationship with my sisters, being eleven years their elder. So, I\u2019ve always been very lonely, and I believe that has had a decisive influence on my poetry. I lacked a firm grip\u201d.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1949<\/div>\n<p>He reads the Greek philosophers and the Spanish mystics. He reads Rimbaud in French.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1951<\/div>\n<p>He starts writing <em>Don de la ebriedad (Gift of Inebriation)<\/em>. He gives up his studies definitely after passing some subjects.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1953<\/div>\n<p>During a university trip to Granada, he meets Clara Miranda, his wife. He sends Vicente Aleixandre the manuscript of his first book, <em>Gift of Inebriation<\/em>. They meet shortly after in the famous house at 3 Velintonia Street. Their relationship will last until Aleixandre\u2019s death in 1984.<\/p>\n<div class=\"times\">\u201cI was lucky to make a deep friendship, an almost filial one, to put it in some way, with Vicente Aleixandre. However, that is not as important in the literary as in the personal aspect. I visited him almost three times a week or more. And it was there where I related more closely to other writers such as Carlos Bouso\u00f1o, Jos\u00e9 \u00c1ngel Valente, Francisco Brines, and \u00c1ngel Gonz\u00e1lez. In any case, these were friends who did not have to do specifically with literature. I have no idea of what the literary world is\u201d.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1954<\/div>\n<p><em>Gift of Inebriation<\/em> is published, which turned out to be a surprise and an event. During the summer, already in Zamora, he makes friends with Blas de Otero, with whom he takes long walks through the city and along the river. The poem \u201cBlas de Otero in Ramon Abrantes\u2019 Workshop\u201d written in memory of these days.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1956<\/div>\n<p>In Madrid, he takes part in the students\u2019 revolts between February 1st and 9th, which resulted in his arrest and subsequent police surveillance in Zamora.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1957<\/div>\n<p>He graduated in Romance Philology at the Central University of Madrid. His minor thesis, directed by Rafael de Balb\u00edn Lucas, is entitled <em>El elemento m\u00e1gico en las canciones de corro infantiles castellanas [&#8216;The Magical Element in Castilian Ring-around-the-rosey Children Songs&#8217;]<\/em>. In December, <em>Gift of Inebriation<\/em> is given the Adon\u00e1is Award. He was just nineteen years old and was earning a degree in Arts.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23 size-large\" src=\"\/ruta-literaria\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/claan-miranda-y-claudio-rodriguez.jpg\" alt=\"Con Clara Miranda, su mujer\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"piefto\">With Clara Miranda, his wife.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"blue\">1958<\/div>\n<p>He moved to Nottingham as a lector in Spanish, thanks to the help of D\u00e1maso Alonso and Vicente Aleixandre, where he remains until 1960. He was fully engaged with teaching at the university and came into contact with the great English Metaphysical and Romantic poets. In November, his second book, <em>Conjuros (Conjurings)<\/em>, appears. It is dedicated to his friend and mentor Vicente Aleixandre.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1959<\/div>\n<p>He marries Clara Miranda in Madrid on July 23. The \u201cCla-Cla\u201d, as Jos\u00e9 Olivio Jim\u00e9nez calls them, will spend their first years of marriage in England.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23 size-large\" src=\"\/ruta-literaria\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/fin-de-curso-con-alumnos-de-claudio-rodriguez-en-nottingham.jpg\" alt=\"Fin de curso con sus alumnos. The University of Nottingham, 1959.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"blue\">1960<\/div>\n<p>He settles at Cambridge University as a lector in Spanish until 1964. His friendship with the poet Francisco Brines, a lecturer at Oxford, was became closer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1964<\/div>\n<p>On his return from Cambridge, he settles in Madrid, determined to devote himself to university teaching, poetry and his friends.<\/p>\n<p>He teaches Spanish Literature at the International High School on Miguel \u00c1ngel Street and, occasionally, at the Complutense University.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1965<\/div>\n<p>He publishes <em>Alianza y Condena (Alliance and Condemnation)<\/em>, written mainly in England.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1966<\/div>\n<p>Critic Award for <em>Alliance and Condemnation<\/em><br \/>\nHe starts translating T.S. Eliot into Spanish commissioned by a Spanish Publisher; however, these versions will never be published.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23 size-large\" src=\"\/ruta-literaria\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/jose-angel-vicente-vicente-aleixandre-y-claudio-rodriguez.jpg\" alt=\"Jos\u00e9 \u00c1ngel Valente, Vicente Aleixandre y Claudio Rodr\u00edguez, 1967\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"piefto\">Jos\u00e9 \u00c1ngel Valente, Vicente Aleixandre, and Claudio Rodr\u00edguez 1967<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"blue\">1975<\/div>\n<p>He returns to Zamora to give a lecture at the School of Education.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1976<\/div>\n<p>He is awarded a grant from the Juan March Foundation, which allows him to work on his new book <em>El vuelo de la celebraci\u00f3n (The Flight of Celebration)<\/em>.<br \/>\nHis mother\u2019s death, with whom he had a difficult relationship, together with that of his sister, shape the writing of his new book.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1980<\/div>\n<p>In December, the Modern Language Association of America (MLA) celebrates the session entitled \u201cIn Honor of Claudio Rodr\u00edguez\u201d, in Houston, Texas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1983<\/div>\n<p>He publishes <em>Desde mis poemas (From my Poems)<\/em>, a compilation volume including all his oeuvre, bestowed with the National Poetry Award.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-23 size-large\" src=\"\/ruta-literaria\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/claudio-rodrigues-con-jose-hierro-y-vicente-aleixandre.jpg\" alt=\"Con Jos\u00e9 Hierro (a la derecha, de pi\u00e9) y Vicente Aleixandre (sentado)\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"piefto\">With Jos\u00e9 Hierro (on the right, standing) and Vicente Aleixandre (seated)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"blue\">1985<\/div>\n<p>He publishes <em>Reflexiones sobre mi poes\u00eda (Reflections about my Poetry)<\/em>.<br \/>\nHe takes part in the Conference <em>Words for a Time of Silence<\/em> in Granada, dedicated to the poetry and novel in the 50s. \u201cWhat marked our generation is friendship, but everyone wrote what he wanted. Perhaps, we were just linked by the importance each one gave, in his own style, to the quality of language or to poetic skill. We were also joined by the same ethical postulates facing certain historical circumstances. Such postulates were not necessarily political\u201d.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1986<\/div>\n<p>Literature Award of Castile and Leon.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1987<\/div>\n<p>He collaborates with the <em>ABC<\/em> newspaper.<br \/>\nThe city of Salamanca names a square after him.<br \/>\nOn December 17th, he is elected a permanent member of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language. He occupies the chair left vacant by Gerardo Diego. This was suggested by Carlos Bouso\u00f1o, Emilio Lorenzo, and Manuel Seco.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1988<\/div>\n<p>On September 24, <em>ABC<\/em> published several translations of Eliot\u2019s poems.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1991<\/div>\n<p>He publishes <em>Casi una leyenda (Almost a Legend)<\/em>.<br \/>\nTwenty-four critics consider it the book published in Spain that year.<br \/>\nThe Critic Award for<em> Almost a Legend<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1992<\/div>\n<p>On March 29, he read his admission speech into the Royal Academy of Spanish Language entitled <em>Poes\u00eda como participaci\u00f3n: hacia Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez<\/em> (&#8216;<em>Poetry as Participation: towards Miguel Hern\u00e1ndez&#8217;)<\/em>. The reply speech is read by Carlos Bouso\u00f1o, his friend and one of the first scholars of Rodr\u00edguez\u2019s oeuvre.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1993<\/div>\n<p>Prince of Asturias Award for Literature.<br \/>\nII Queen Sof\u00eda Award of Ibero-American Poetry instituted by the National Heritage and the University of Salamanca.<br \/>\nThe University of Salamanca publishes the anthology <em>Hacia el canto (Towards the Songs)<\/em>.<br \/>\nThe Hispanic Institute and Columbia University (New York) dedicate a monographic issue to him in <em>Modern Hispanic Journal<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1995<\/div>\n<p>He is appointed trustee of the Cervantes Institute.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1996<\/div>\n<p>He is elected member of the Poetry Academy of Castile and Leon.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1998<\/div>\n<p>He is invited to the I Meeting of European Poetry at the Students\u2019 Hostel.<br \/>\nPoetry Award of the Poetry Academy of Castile and Leon due to his oeuvre.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">1999<\/div>\n<p>He dies in Madrid on July 22 and was buried at the Atilano Cementery in Zamora.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blue\">2005<\/div>\n<p><em>Aventura (Adventure)<\/em>, a book collecting his posthumous poems, is published.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>LITERARY ROUTE OF CLAUDIO RODR\u00cdGUEZ THROUGH ZAMORA Claudio Rodr\u00edguez was a fine observer of reality.
